The Arrival in the Holy City of Makkah

After the heart-wrenching farewell to the sacred city of Medina and the blessed graves of his ancestors, the caravan of the grandson of the Holy Prophet, Imam Hussain, journeyed through the vast expanse of the Arabian desert, finally reaching the sanctuary of Makkah in the blessed month of Sha’ban in the year sixty of the Hijra. The sight of the Kaaba, the ancient House of God, offered a momentary solace to the Imam and his family, a reminder of the divine protection that this sacred city was meant to provide to the faithful. Upon his arrival, Imam Hussain took up residence in the holy home of his grandmother, the esteemed Huzoor Syeda Khadija-tul-Kubra, the first wife of the Holy Prophet and the mother of his daughter, Fatima Zahra. This house held profound spiritual significance, for it was within these walls that the Prophet had received some of the earliest revelations and where the seeds of the Islamic faith were nurtured in the face of immense Quraysh opposition. By choosing to stay there, the Imam was not merely seeking shelter but was making a powerful statement, anchoring himself in the legacy of his grandmother, a woman whose unwavering support for the Prophet was a testament to her faith and courage.

The Period of Waiting and the Influx of Visitors

The news of Imam Hussain’s arrival in Makkah spread like wildfire throughout the Hijaz and beyond. The holy city, which was already bustling with pilgrims and visitors, became a focal point for those who were disheartened by the tyranny of the Umayyad regime. People from various regions, including the Hijaz and Basra, began to gather around the Imam, seeking his guidance and expressing their allegiance to the Ahlul Bayt . The house of Khadija transformed from a quiet residence into a vibrant center of religious and political discourse, filled with the murmurs of those who sought the truth and a leader who could restore justice to a community that had strayed from the path of the Prophet. However, the Imam did not rush to declare any open revolt. He listened patiently to the grievances of the people and assessed the political climate with the wisdom and foresight that defined his character.

It was during this time in Makkah that the Imam received the most significant and persistent invitations from the people of Kufa, a city in Iraq that was brimming with supporters of his father, Ali ibn Abi Talib. Hundreds of letters arrived, carried by numerous messengers, pleading with Imam Hussain to come to Kufa and lead them against the oppression of the Umayyads. The letters described a populace yearning for guidance, an Ummah without a true leader, and a city ready to rise in support of the grandson of the Prophet . The Kufans wrote with great fervor, stating that they had no Imam to lead their Friday prayers and that they longed for Hussain to unite them on the path of truth . Despite their earnest appeals and the sheer volume of correspondence, Imam Hussain did not act impulsively. He understood the fickle nature of the people and the gravity of the decision. Instead of heeding their calls immediately, he decided to take a cautious and measured approach, sending his cousin, Muslim bin Aqeel, as his ambassador to Kufa to verify the authenticity of their claims and to report back on the true situation on the ground . This act demonstrated the Imam’s deep sense of responsibility, as he would not lead his family and followers into a perilous situation based solely on unsubstantiated promises.

The Conspiracy in the Shadow of the Kaaba

As the days of the pilgrimage approached and the city of Makkah swelled with people from all over the Muslim world, the tension in the air became palpable. Imam Hussain continued to perform his religious rites, and his presence attracted not only sincere supporters but also the watchful eyes of the Umayyad agents. The political atmosphere reached a boiling point when it became known that a sinister plot was being hatched to assassinate the Imam during the sacred rituals of the Hajj. It was discovered that four individuals, concealing sharp swords beneath their pilgrim attire, had infiltrated the mass of worshippers with the sole purpose of martyring Imam Hussain while he was performing the Tawaf, the circumambulation of the Kaaba.

The revelation of this assassination plot signified that even the sanctuary of the Kaaba, a place of absolute peace and protection, had been violated by the tyrannical regime of Yazeed. The sanctity of the holy city was no longer a shield for the grandson of the Prophet. The Umayyads, in their desperation to silence the voice of truth, were willing to desecrate the most sacred site in Islam. Imam Hussain was left with an impossible choice: to remain in Makkah and risk being martyred within the confines of the sanctuary, an act that would defile the holy city with bloodshed and set a dangerous precedent of violence within the Haram, or to leave the city and move towards an unknown fate. He chose to protect the sanctity of the Kaaba, opting to depart rather than allow it to become a place of murder and political assassination.

The Transformation of Pilgrimage and the Fateful Departure

It was on the eighth day of Dhul-Hijjah, the Day of Tarwiyah, when the pilgrims traditionally set out for Mina to begin the rites of Hajj, that Imam Hussain made his momentous decision. He could not perform the Hajj as it was intended, for to do so would be to walk into a death trap set by his enemies. Therefore, he performed the rituals of Umrah, the lesser pilgrimage, instead of the Hajj . He went to the Kaaba, performed the Tawaf and the Sa’i between Safa and Marwah, and then, in a deeply symbolic act that signified his departure from the expected course, he left the state of Ihram, transforming his intended Hajj into an Umrah . This decision was not born of fear but of profound strategic wisdom. By doing so, he freed himself from the constraints of the pilgrimage and enabled his caravan to depart immediately, leaving the Umayyad plotters bewildered and their plan to assassinate him in the holy months nullified.

Before his departure, Imam Hussain had already set in motion the political machinery by dispatching his loyal cousin, Muslim bin Aqeel, to Kufa. Muslim’s mission was to assess the loyalty and commitment of the Kufans and to establish contact with the leaders of the city. He wrote back to the Imam, confirming the massive outpouring of support, with over eighteen thousand men pledging their allegiance . However, unbeknownst to the Imam, the situation in Kufa was about to change drastically. Yazeed, upon hearing of the unrest, had appointed the ruthless Ubaidullah ibn Ziyad as the new governor of Kufa, who immediately began a campaign of terror, threatening and killing the supporters of the Ahlul Bayt, ultimately capturing and brutally executing Muslim bin Aqeel . The death of his ambassador and the news of the Kufan betrayal would reach Imam Hussain only on the road, confirming his worst fears and revealing the true, treacherous nature of the people he was travelling to assist.

With the grave danger in Makkah and the hope of Kufa turning into a mirage, Imam Hussain set out on the eighth of Dhul-Hijjah, accompanied by his family, his children, and a small band of loyal companions . The journey from the sanctuary of Makkah was a journey into the abyss of sacrifice, a march that would transcend the boundaries of geography and time, transforming a political stand into an eternal and universal revolution of conscience that continues to resonate through the ages.
