According to narrations preserved in certain Islamic traditions, the profound connection between the sacrifice of Prophet Ismael and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain was established in a divine covenant before the creation of the world. This narrative holds that the intended sacrifice of Ismael by his father, Prophet Ibraheem, was not merely a test of faith but also a precursor to an even greater act of submission that would take place many centuries later.

The Covenant of Sacrifice in the Pre-Existence

In the realm of pre-existence, before the creation of the physical world, the events of the future were known to Allah. It is related that when the moment of Prophet Ibraheem’s trial approached and he was commanded to sacrifice his son, a divine covenant was established. In this covenant, it is narrated that Imam Hussain willingly offered himself as a substitute for the sacrifice of Prophet Ismael. This act was not a literal substitution in time, but a spiritual one of profound consequence. Imam Hussain, who was to be born many generations later as the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, accepted this immense responsibility. This was so the lineage of the Prophet could continue through Ismael, allowing for the birth of the final Prophet and his pure family, the Panjtan Paak.

The Divine Acceptance and the Sacrificial Ram

This willing acceptance of a future, redemptive sacrifice was accepted by Almighty Allah. As a sign of this acceptance, the Angel Jibreel was commanded to intervene at the very moment Prophet Ibraheem was about to perform the sacrifice of his son. According to this understanding, the ram, or Mainda, which appeared and was sacrificed in place of Ismael, served not only as a substitution for that specific moment but also as a symbol of the greater sacrifice that had been willed in the divine realm by Imam Hussain.

The sequence of events on that day is traditionally described as follows. Prophet Ibraheem, in total obedience to the divine command, took his son Ismael to the place of sacrifice in Mina. Ismael, who was fully aware of the command, submitted with patience and constancy. As an act of mercy and to prevent him from witnessing the act which was decreed, Prophet Ibraheem bound his own eyes with a cloth. When he placed the knife upon the throat of his son, the divine intervention occurred. Through the power of Allah, the ram that had been prepared since the acceptance of Hussain’s covenant was put in Ismael’s place. The knife, which was meant for the son, worked upon the ram, and it was sacrificed. At that moment, when Prophet Ibraheem opened his eyes, he found his son Ismael standing safely beside him, having been spared through the divine mercy and the prophetic covenant that was fulfilled through Hussain.

A Continuous Legacy of Submission

This narrative establishes a powerful spiritual lineage between the two sacrifices. The sacrifice of Ismael is seen as the beginning of this sacred story, a testament to absolute submission, while the sacrifice of Imam Hussain at Karbala is seen as its culmination and ultimate expression. In this view, the life of Imam Hussain was always dedicated to this divine purpose. His stand at Karbala was not merely a political uprising but the fulfillment of the covenant made before time, an act of redemptive sacrifice for the sake of the Muslim community. This is why the great poet Allama Iqbal poetically linked the two events, declaring that the beginning of this divine story is Ismael, and its climax is Hussain.

Therefore, the event of Prophet Ibraheem preparing to sacrifice his son, the divine intervention with the ram, and the subsequent martyrdom of Imam Hussain at Karbala are seen as a single, continuous narrative of absolute submission to the will of Allah, with Hussain’s sacrifice representing the fulfillment of a covenant made in the divine realm before the creation of the world.
