The Sacred Farewell to Jannatul Baqee

After commanding his household, including the valiant Hadrat Abbas and his beloved son Hadrat Ali Akbar, to prepare for the momentous journey, Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Holy Prophet, felt an unbearable weight upon his heart. The material preparations were complete, but his soul yearned for a final, intimate communion with those who had shaped his very being. With the silence of the night as his only companion, he walked through the familiar, yet now alien, streets of Medina towards the sacred cemetery of Jannatul Baqee. His steps were heavy, not with fatigue, but with the sorrow of an eternal departure. The land of his birth, the city of his grandfather, had become a cage of coercion, and his heart could find no solace except at the graves of his beloved family. This was a farewell not just to the dead, but to the living history of his lineage, a pilgrimage to the very roots of his faith before he uprooted himself for the sake of truth.

The Profound Lament at the Shrine of the Holy Mother

Imam Hussain’s first stop was at the holy shrine of his mother, the chief of the women of the worlds, Huzoor Syeda Fatima-tu-Zahrah, peace be upon her. As he approached her sacred resting place, the composure that had fortified him against the demands of Waleed shattered completely. He fell to his knees, his body trembling, and tears streamed down his face like a torrential rain. In a voice choked with anguish, he spoke to his mother as if she could hear him from the veils of paradise. He cried out, “O my mother, O Fatima the Radiant! The land of Medina has become too narrow for us to live in. The very ground that once echoed with the footsteps of your father and your husband has become a prison for your son. The covenant of faith has been broken, and the banner of truth is being trampled upon by the forces of oppression. I have been asked to give my hand in allegiance to a tyrant who knows no law but his own desire.”

He continued, his voice rising and falling with the intensity of his grief, “O my mother, I am leaving this city, the city of my birth, for I cannot stay and witness its sanctity being violated. I am taking your daughters, Zainab and Kulsum, and your grandchildren, away from the home that once held your laughter. The journey ahead is dark and perilous, but I cannot remain silent when the legacy of my grandfather is being desecrated. I am leaving, O my mother, but my heart remains with you, interred in this blessed soil. Pray for your son, that he may remain steadfast on the path that you and your father have illuminated.”

As the Imam wept, the very air around the shrine seemed to thicken with a profound spiritual response. In the realm of souls, Syeda Fatima Zahra was present, her heart aching for the trials of her son. Her voice, soft as a whisper but as powerful as a divine command, filled the spiritual space, consoling her grieving child. She spoke to him, saying, “My beloved Hussain, my son, my solace, do not weep for leaving this land. The house of your grandfather is indeed in jeopardy, but the house of faith is your true abode. I know the path you must tread; I have seen it in the revelations given to your grandfather. The world is fleeting, but the loyalty to Allah is eternal. Go, my son, go with the courage of your father Ali, and the patience of your brother Hassan. The reward for your sacrifice is not in this world but in the eternal gardens where I await you. Do not look back in sorrow, for you are carrying the torch of guidance that will forever illuminate the darkness of oppression. My prayers, my blessings, and my love are with you, now and always.”

The Solemn Address to the Holy Prophet(SAWAW)

After his heart-wrenching farewell to his mother, Imam Hussain, wiping his tears, walked with a heavy heart to the holy shrine of his grandfather, the master of creation, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his progeny. This was the most agonizing of all farewells, for the Prophet was not only his grandfather but the source of all his knowledge, his moral compass, and the one who had foretold the very trials he was about to face. Reaching the sacred dome, Imam Hussain placed his hands upon the blessed grave and bowed his head, his soul in a state of profound reverence and sorrow. He raised his voice in a prayer of supplication and farewell, his words echoing with the weight of absolute truth.

“O Messenger of Allah, my grandfather, I am Hussain, the son of your daughter Fatima,” he began, his voice breaking. “I am your beloved, the one you cherished and kissed. I have come to bid you farewell, for I am being driven from your city. The people of your nation have abandoned the path you showed them. They are demanding from me an oath of allegiance to a man who is an enemy of your sunnah. I am leaving, O Prophet of Allah, not out of fear, but to protect the essence of the religion you brought. I am leaving to enjoin good and forbid evil, just as you commanded. I ask you to be my witness that I have been wronged, that the covenant has been broken, and that I am rising not for power, but for the preservation of your legacy.”

He continued, his heart pouring out its deepest fears and hopes, “O Allah, I complain to You and to Your Prophet of what has befallen me. The city of my grandfather is no longer safe for me, and the enemies of faith are hunting me. I know that the path ahead is steep and fraught with danger, but I have no choice but to tread it. I seek Your guidance and Your protection. By the right of this grave and the one who rests in it, choose for me what is best, what pleases You and Your Prophet.”

In his grief, the Imam recounted a dream he had at the grave, a powerful vision that was both a revelation and a consolation. He saw the Holy Prophet, surrounded by a host of angels, approaching him with a look of profound compassion. The Prophet drew Hussain close, kissed him between his eyes, and spoke the words that would forever resonate in the hearts of the faithful. The Prophet said, “O my beloved Hussain, I see you as if you are drenched in your own blood, a martyr at a place of grief and trials. You will be beheaded by a group from my nation, and despite being thirsty, they will not give you a drop of water. Yet, they will still seek my intercession. May Allah keep them away from my intercession.”

Imam Hussain, with a tearful plea, responded, “O my grandfather, I desire not to return to this world. Please take me with you, and let me be near you in this grave.”

The Holy Prophet, his voice filled with divine wisdom and a promise of an unfathomable reward, replied, “My son, you must return to your mission. You must attain the station of martyrdom, which is the highest honor in the sight of Allah. The rewards and the station in Paradise that await you are so great that you cannot reach them except through this path of sacrifice. On the Day of Judgment, you, along with your father Ali, your uncle Hamza, and your brother Hassan, will be raised as a distinguished group, the leaders of the faithful, until you all enter Paradise together. Your sacrifice will revive my religion for eternity. Go, my beloved Hussain, with my love and my blessings.”

A Final Supplication for All Departed Souls

Having bid farewell to the two most important figures in his life, Imam Hussain then turned his attention to the other sacred graves within Jannatul Baqee. He moved with the same profound sorrow towards the resting place of his brother, Hadrat Hassan-al-Mujtaba, the peacemaker whose life was a testament to patience and sacrifice. He stood by his brother’s grave, recalling his kind nature, his wise counsel, and the shared mission they bore. He whispered to Hassan, “O my brother, we were inseparable in life, and now I am leaving your sacred resting place. The oppressors who poisoned you now seek to poison my cause. Pray for your brother, for the road ahead is a road of loneliness. I am following the path of our grandfather and father, and I know you will be with me in spirit.”

Imam Hussain then proceeded to the grave of his other brother, the infant Hadrat Ibraheem, the son of the Holy Prophet, whose early death had brought immense sorrow to the Prophet himself. Standing at this small and simple grave, Imam Hussain reflected on the transient nature of life and the profound truth that even the youngest of the Prophet’s household was not spared by the decree of fate. He offered his prayers and salutations to this innocent soul, seeing in his early death a mirror of the tragedies that were to befall his own children. He sought the intercession of all those buried in Baqee, his grandmother Fatima bint Asad, his uncle Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib, and all the companions and family members who rested there. This final circuit of the cemetery was a complete recapitulation of his heritage, a moment of deep spiritual preparation where he gathered the blessings and the prayers of all his ancestors before he stepped into the abyss of the unknown. With a heart heavy but resolved, and a soul illuminated by the promises he had received, Imam Hussain turned his back on the holy city, his farewell complete, his mission clear, and his destination sealed in the heavens.
